Now is the perfect time to replace old or damaged agricultural fencing and here is our guide how!

The Importance of Agricultural Fencing

Agricultural fencing is a vital part of any farm operation that involves raising animals or running a farm. Creating boundaries, serves many purposes, including:

Protecting Animals

It is important the animals are always kept safe, and fencing allows this by:

  • Preventing animals from wandering off the farm, getting into traffic, or entering areas where they are not allowed or welcomed.
  • Acting as a Deterrent to intruders, trespassers, and animal predators such as foxes, dogs, and birds of prey, preventing theft and improving security.

Demarcation of Boundaries

Agricultural fencing can mark the boundaries of land which helps farmers to identify, measure, and manage land effectively, aiding with financial support, for instance making applications to the basic payment scheme easier.

Fencing can also help to resolve or prevent disputes with neighbours or authorities over land ownership, rights, and responsibilities.

Appearance

Fencing can also enhance the appearance and value of a farm or field by creating a neat and tidy look and reflect the style and character of the farmer or the farm.

Different Types of Livestock Fencing

There are different types of fencing available for livestock, depending on the size, behaviour, and needs of the animals, as well as the budget, preference, and situation of the farmer. Some of the common types of livestock fencing are:

Post and rail Fencing is one of the most traditional and popular types of livestock fencing. It consists of wooden posts and rails that form a physical barrier that can withstand the pressure and impact of the animals. Post and rail fencing can be adapted to different terrains and layouts. Post and rail fencing is effective and durable.

Stock Fencing is a broad category, with a range of netting and wire options available, including stock netting, deer netting, horse netting, chicken/pig wire, barbed wire, to name a few. A very popular form of stock fencing is the heavy-grade, galvanised steel stock netting, which commonly comes in lengths of 50m,100m or 500m rolls and is usually sold with round wooden fence posts. This netting is typically designed for enclosing, protecting, and separating farm animals such as pigs, lambs, and sheep.

Field Gates are used to keep animals in and out of a certain area with the ability to be able to drive vehicles and machinery through the desired areas with the added benefit of proving security for properties. A field gate can be made of wood or metal and come in different shapes, sizes, and strengths, depending on the purpose and design.
